Atrial Fibrillation

Helping Yourself

Certain medications and substances can contribute to an irregular heartbeat, including:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Certain medications (appetite suppressants, cough and cold products and medications used to treat mental illnesses)
  • Drugs such as cocaine and marijuana
  • Tobacco

If you are experiencing symptoms of AF, or currently have AF, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about taking these substances.

Since coronary artery disease, heart failure, high blood pressure and chronic lung disease put a person at higher risk for developing AF, work with your healthcare provider to effectively treat or prevent these diseases.

In addition, you can keep your heart strong by maintaining a healthy body weight through proper diet and exercise. Ask your healthcare provider for information on smart eating habits and regular physical activity.
