Breast Cancer

Helping Yourself

The American Cancer Society recommends self-examination of breasts for all women over the age of 20 on a monthly basis. These exams should be done at or near the same time of the month since there can be some changes in breast tissue during the menstrual cycle. A physician should perform breast exams every three years for women age 20 to 39 and yearly for women age 40 or older. Routine mammography screening is recommended to begin at age 40 and to be performed every one to two years until age 49. Women should have a yearly mammography after age 50.

It is also important to eat a low fat diet, get plenty of exercise, and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake.
