Selective Factor Xa Inhibitor (Pentasaccharide)
Fondaparinux (Arixtra) is the only agent in this class that is currently being marketed in the United States. It works similarly to heparin by "thinning" blood to prevent or treat DVT. Fondaparinux has been found to work well for the prevention of DVT after someone has undergone knee replacement, hip replacement, or hip fracture surgery.
