Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitor

Sitagliptin is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise, as single therapy to improve glycemic control in persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is also indicated to improve glycemic control, in combination with metformin or a thiazolidinedione (TZD), in persons with type 2 diabetes when the single agent alone, with diet and exercise, does not provide adequate glycemic control. Sitagliptin should be used carefully in people taking sulfonylureas due to an increased risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Conversely, sitagliptin should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis, as it would not be effective in these settings.

Drugs in the class

Sitagliptin tablets (Januvia)
