Tricyclic Antidepressants

Tricyclic antidepressants are used in treatment of pain associated with postherpatic neuralgia (PHN). These drugs are believed to reduce nerve-generated pain by affecting certain neurotransmitters, substances produced in the body that carry signals between nerve cells and other cells. When used in pain relief, antidepressants are prescribed in smaller doses than those needed to treat depression.
