Quinolones
Quinolones work by interfering with an enzyme that allows bacteria to reproduce, thereby halting the growth of bacteria and eventually leading to their death.
Certain quinolones (especially ciprofloxacin) help heal fistulas (openings that grow abnormally from one loop of intestine to another or that connect the intestine to the bladder, vagina, or skin) associated with Crohn?s disease by killing the bacteria present in the fecal matter contained in the fistulas. Although certain bacteria are normally present in feces, the abnormal opening of the fistula exposes the bacteria to unprotected areas of the body that would be susceptible to infection from these aggressive pathogens.
