Penicillins
The increased thickness of lung secretions caused by CF create a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. When bacteria multiply, they can infect the surrounding lung tissue causing inflammation. Generally, lung infections in CF patients are often difficult to treat because antibiotics cannot always penetrate into the infected tissues. In fact, over 90% of deaths in CF patients are due to lung infections. Antibiotic treatment may be needed to kill the bacteria that cause lung infections, thus curing the infection.
