Potassium-sparing Diuretics
In CF patients, amiloride increases the water content of the mucus in the respiratory tract, thus thinning the mucus. By thinning the abnormally thick mucus secretions that CF patients produce, this potassium-sparing diuretic may help patients cough up (expectorate) any mucus that may prevent the patient from breathing normally.
