Alkaloid Derivatives

Capsaicin, a nonprescription cream most frequently used topically to relieve arthritis pain, can also be used for mild to moderate pain associated with shingles and postherpatic neuralgia (PHN). It works by blocking a certain neurotransmitter (substance P), a substance produced in the body that carries signals between nerve cells and other cells. However, Capsaicin, made from the seeds of hot peppers, can sometimes worsen PHN pain by causing a burning sensation and skin irritation.
