Cytotoxic Drugs
- Properties: Ability to target and kill rapidly growing cells and therefore are useful in suppressing the cells involved in the hyperactive immune response in SLE.
- Recommended users: Reserved for individuals who have flares that greatly impair the kidneys or central nervous system.
- Common side effects: Hair loss, nausea, vomiting, increased risk of cancer and infection, and bladder problems.
