Biologic Response Modifiers
Biologic Response Modifiers work by inhibiting tumor necrosis factor (TNF). TNF is a cytokine, or signaling chemical, that induces protective inflammatory reactions against bacteria such as Salmonella and kills tumor cells. While beneficial, TNF also causes severe tissue damage when too much is produced. This appears to be the case in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. Etanercept (Enbrel) and infliximab (Remicade) are biologic response modifiers that inhibit the amount of TNF released into the body. This inhibition is thought to lead to a reduction in inflammation.
