Anaerobic Antibiotic

Certain antibiotics (especially metronidazole) help heal fistulas (openings that grow abnormally from one loop of intestine to another or that connect the intestine to the bladder, vagina, or skin) associated with Crohn's disease by killing the bacteria present in the fecal matter contained in the fistulas. Although certain bacteria are normally present in feces, the abnormal opening of the fistula exposes the bacteria to unprotected areas of the body that would be susceptible to infection from these aggressive pathogens.
