Dopamine Receptor Agonists

Dopamine receptor agonists mimic the effects of dopamine in the brain and cause the nerve cells to react as if dopamine was present. Side effects associated with these drugs occur more frequently when the drug is first started and with higher doses.

Levodopa and carbidopa (Sinemet) is the most widely prescribed drug and is especially helpful for individuals who have decreased cognition or a functional disability. The extended release preparation, called Sinemet SR, allows for less frequent dosing than the standard formulation.
