Treatment Options

COMT Inhibitors

COMT inhibitors are the newest class of drugs for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. These medications extend the efficacy and optimize the benefits of levodopa and carbidopa. COMT inhibitors are prescribed only when the maximum dose of levodopa is no longer effective.

Entacapone (Comtan) and tolcapone (Tasmar) are the 2 drugs in this class. Tolcapone is associated with a rare, but significant risk of severe liver toxicity. Doctors must continuously monitor patients taking tolcapone for liver toxicity. A brownish-orange discoloration of the urine is a common side effect that may occur with these two medications.

Drugs in the class

Tolcapone Tablets (Tasmar)

Entacapone Tablets (Comtan Tablets)
