Phosphodiesterase Enzyme Inhibitors

Currently there are 3 phosphodiesterase enzyme inhibitors that are used to treat erectile dysfunction. These medications do not directly cause an erection of the penis, but they alter the body's response to sexual stimulation by enhancing the effect of the nitric oxide, a chemical that is normally released during stimulation. Nitric oxide causes relaxation of the muscles in the penis, which allows for better blood flow to the penile area.

Viagra and Levitra are to be taken 30-60 minutes before sexual intercourse and should not be taken more than once per day. However, Cialis can be taken for up to 24 hours prior to sexual intercourse. Side effects and interactions with other drugs can result therefore it is very important to get the prescription from your doctor.
