Treatment Options

Anticonvulsants

Topiramate has been shown to be effective for bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder in small clinical trials. A small clinical trial has shown that zonisamide was effective for binge-eating disorder but not well tolerated. One of the side effects of these drugs is weight loss, which could be of benefit in bulimic or binge-eating individuals who are overweight. However, because of this side effect, these medicines should not be used in persons that are either normal weight or underweight. Topiramate and zonisamide are not widely used for these conditions, but that could change if more evidence from larger trials becomes available.

Drugs in the class
