Atypical Antipsychotics

Two medications from this group, olanzapine (Zyprexa) and risperidone (Risperdal), have been used in the treatment of anorexia nervosa. They work by binding to specific receptors in the brain to help correct imbalances of certain chemicals. The correction of those chemicals helps to relieve the anxiety, obsessive behavior, and limited insight associated with eating in anorexic individuals. Atypical antipsychotics may be associated with fewer side effects than the older, typical antipsychotics.
