Treatment Options
Corticosteroids
- Properties: Anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties make these drugs the mainstay of lupus treatment.
- Treatment goal: Suppress, and maintain suppression of, active disease with the lowest dose possible.
- Recommended users: Low-dose steroids can be used in patients with mild disease who fail conservative measures like NSAIDs.
- Common side effects: Fluid retention, muscle weakness, weight gain, increased blood sugar, and bone growth suppression (osteoporosis).
