Thrombolytic Agents
Thrombolytic agents are injected slowly to dissolve dangerous clots rapidly. They are usually reserved for life-threatening pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung) or ischemic strokes since they have a greater risk of causing serious bleeding. They are given under close supervision in hospitals. However, studies are investigating the effectiveness and safety of these agents when they are injected directly into blood clots. One study is investigating a "pulse spray" involving short injections given once or twice a day directly into a clot. Drugs in the class
Alteplase (Activase)
Urokinase ()
Streptokinase (Streptase)
Reteplase (Retavase) |
