Oral Anticoagulants

Oral anticoagulants take about 1 week to become fully active in decreasing the ability of the blood to clot. Until they become completely active, they may be taken with heparin or low molecular weight heparins. Once the oral drug reaches full effectiveness, it is usually continued for 3 to 6 months or longer to prevent additional blood clots from forming.
