Alpha Blockers

Unlike other drugs that affect mostly the heart, the blood vessels around the heart, and the kidneys, alpha blockers work more on "peripheral" arteries and veins--those in the arms and legs. These drugs work as ?vasodilators? to decrease resistance in these arteries resulting in lower blood pressure. These drugs have been shown to be less effective than those in other classes and are not typically used as first-line therapy. They are also not normally used by themselves but rather in combination with other classes of anti-hypertensives in those patients with high blood pressure that is difficult to control.

Drugs in the class

Terazosin (Hytrin)

Doxazosin Tablets (Cardura Tablets)

Prazosin (Minipress)
