Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI)

Selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) work by increasing amounts of two chemicals--serotonin and norepinephrine--in the brain. Known as neurotransmitters, chemicals such as norepinephrine and serotonin affect alertness, energy, mood, and motivation. Low levels of neurotransmitters can cause mood disorders like depression. By increasing the amounts of two neurotransmitters, SNRIs may treat depression that does not respond adequately to drugs that target only one neurotransmitter.
