Inhaled Corticosteroids

Inhaled corticosteroids reach the lungs quickly, but they are not meant to stop asthma attacks that have already started. Instead, they are used on a regular basis to prevent attacks and lessen the severity of asthma episodes that do occur. Although the exact ways that they work are not known completely, inhaled corticosteroids limit inflammation within the lungs. Preventive asthma drugs such as inhaled corticosteroids are often called controllers.
