Estrogens

These agents supplement hormones that are formed and secreted by various glands. They play a key role in the development and normal function of secondary sex characteristics and the reproductive system. They also assist in the development and maintenance of bones.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a statement advising women and health care professionals about important new safety changes to labeling of all estrogen and estrogen with progestin products for use by postmenopausal women. New studies found that the combination therapy of estrogen and progestin product increased risk of heart disease and breast cancer. The FDA advised women to talk to their doctors, and if they decide that estrogen and progestin containing products are appropriate, they should use the lowest dose, for the shortest duration possible. For more information, talk to your health care professional.
