Disease Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs
- Properties: Anti-inflammatory activity and ability to decrease sensitivity to ultraviolet light make them effective in treating joint pain, skin rashes, and ulcers associated with lupus.
- Typical use: Best used for long-term management of lupus, because it may take weeks to months for maximal improvements to be seen.
- Common side effects: Side effects involving the eye are the most feared complication of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, skin color changes, and diarrhea are common.
