Calcium Channel Blockers

Calcium channel blockers are generally used as third-line agents for combination with other drugs for the treatment of bipolar disorder. They are also used as treatment for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding due to their lower teratogenic properties when compared to the other drug classes used to treat bipolar disorder. They work by inhibiting the production of certain neurotransmitters (chemicals that allow for communication between nerve cells) in order to correct imbalances in the brain.

Drugs in the class

Verapamil Extended-Release Capsules (Verapamil Sustained-Release CapsuleVerelan Sustained-Release Capsule)

Nimodipine (Nimotop)

Verapamil Tablets (Calan Tablets)
