Health Conditions

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

What causes it?

Atherosclerosis, or the build-up of fatty material (plaque) inside your arteries, is the most common cause of PAD. Plaque is thought to be made up of fat, calcium, and cholesterol, and can collect in any blood vessel.

Less common causes of PAD include injury to a limb, inflammation (swelling) of the blood vessels, abnormalities in the structure of arteries, a serious infection, or blood clots in the arteries.
