Because prostate cancer is typically a slowly developing cancer, careful observation (also known as "watchful waiting") may be an option. This is especially true for patients who are in the early stages of the disease, those older than 65 who have other serious medical problems, or men with a shortened life expectancy due to other medical conditions. In such cases, careful observation allows the patient to avoid the potential side effects associated with more aggressive therapies.
